EXHIBITION IN BERLIN: GUY BOURDIN AND HELMUT NEWTON

Winter means plenty of time for museums and galleries. So here is my favorite one for all photography enthusiasts in Berlin: From December 1st, the Helmut Newton Foundation is presenting the new exhibition Guy Bourdin alongside with selected works from Helmut Newton.

Why do those two have a connection?

In the 1960s and 1970s, Guy Bourdin revolutionized fashion photography similar to Helmut Newton. Both worked for the same fashion magazines – for French Vogue, for example – and for brands in the fashion world. Apart from the obviously timeless elegance in their work, both of them developed the idea of the so-called “Radical Chic” independently of each other.

Two pioneers of fashion photography

In the Berlin exhibition, the two influential fashion photographers will be shown together for the first time to the same extent. So bring some time with you to enjoy the selected works.
Because their work is truly amazing and the fashion is as intriguing as it was nearly fifty year ago. While Bourdin found a major client in the French designer Charles Jourdan from 1967, Newton photographed the collections of different clients such as Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler, Mario Valentino or Blumarine in addition to the magazine editorials, which he is also well-known for.

Newton self-ironically called himself “A Gun for Hire” – and so was the exhibition of his commissions of the 1990s, which was shown in 2005 posthumously in Monaco and Berlin and later in Budapest.

A selection of this late work will now be shown again in the Helmut Newton Foundation – in contrast to the earlier work by Guy Bourdin. And for all of you, who can’t get enough of Newton make sure to check out the June’s Room at the foundation, too: There you’ll find “Another Story” by Newton’s former assistant Angelo Marino.

Guy Bourdin “Image Maker” from 1st of December, 2017 to the 13th of May, 2018 at Helmut Newton Foundation, Jebensstraße 2, 10623 Berlin.
