INDUSTRIAL DESIGN MEETS SAILORS: 25 HOURS HOTEL HAMBURG HAFENCITY

The hotel is characterized, besides its top location, by its unique and above all authentic design, inspired by the shipping industry. Almost ten years after the opening, the 25hours Hamburg Hafencity is still a modern hotspot for global nomads, with 170 rooms to feel good in, an excellent breakfast and a view over the famous harbor of Hamburg.

DESIGN

What makes Hafencity so special are the futuristic modern buildings and the passenger port for cruise ships.
This industrial vibe was continued in the design of the hotel, with a concept created by interior designer Fabian Tank. As soon as you enter the lobby, which among other things is equipped with an original shipping container as a conference room, you see, that every detail has been considered to create the perfect authentic maritime style. In addition to comfortable rustic seating, the reception area is also located here. We received a friendly and very obliging welcome, were comprehensively informed and were able to check in immediately without waiting.

THE ROOMS

Central design elements are the sea chest, bunk beds and pilot ladder. The wallpaper is quite special and you have the feeling that you will always discover a new joke or comic amid the drawings.  And even when you might think, as I did in the first place, that romanticizing half-naked women and seafarer jokes is outdated in 2020: those drawings are actual drawings from the sketchbooks of seamen.

RESTAURANT

On the ground floor of the 25hours, the restaurant “Heimat” invites not only the hotel guests to great regional dishes.  The atmosphere is chic but relaxed, dishes from the region with selected ingredients are offered at reasonable prices.  A great wine selection also invites you to have a drink in the evening at concerts and events in the restaurant and hotel. We had breakfast there, which is normally served as a buffet with a broad variety to choose from. This time, we were served at the table, but the dishes weren’t any less to choose from. But bring some time to queue up in those times, since there are fewer tables to sit at because of the restrictions.

CLUB ROOMS, GIFT SHOP AND A SAUNA

Also on the ground floor you will find the 25hours things shop.  Here you will find everything you need in case you forgot it at home, plus great souvenirs and regional articles and books.  In the sixth floor there is the harbour sauna with an impressive view to the harbour and the ship terminal, which is included for the hotel guests.  In the outdoor area you can also cool down directly after the sauna, which unfortunately was closed during our visit due to COVID-19 restrictions.

SUSTAINABILITY

We are always in search of something good in the travel industry.  25 Hours is working as a good example.  In the bathroom, you find shower gels, soaps and shampoo made by the sustainable beauty brand “stop the water while using me”.  Those bottles are disinfected after the visit, but aren’t thrown away, as it is usual for small single-use bottles, which you normally find in hotel bathrooms. Plus, 25 hours hotels are supporting the charity “Nepal water project” which was started by Viva con agua, a drink water beverage brand.  With every booking they donate an amount to this charity.
