A weekend at home! Sometimes, getting really tired of traveling I’m happy to explore what my hometown Hamburg has to offer. Good news: there’s a new place in town! After “Küchenfreunde” and “Was wir wirklich lieben” comes “Botanic District“: this weekend I finally got to try the newest accomplishment by Tim Lang and Johannes Schröder, who have successfully established their little foodie empire at Hegestrasse in Hamburg.
Food and Drinks
At a well-known location (Ex -Pius Winebar) the new Botanic District, a restaurant and bar concept, opened it’s doors two weeks ago and is already fully booked on weekends, serving Burgers, bowls, and highballs. Tobias Lipinski, who used to work at the infamous Le Lion – Bar de Paris (birthplace of the Gin Basil Smash) serves 50 different wines, 20 gins, and Highballs from 5,50€ infused with lavender or thyme.
Our favorite drinks include: Violette Fizz with Vodka, Lavender, Crème de Violette, Egg White, Lemon Soda, Botanic Mule with Vodka, Thyme, Lime, Ginger Beer, Angostura, Mexican Pineapple with Tequila, Sage, Pineapple, Lime, Ginger Ale and Paloma with Tequila, Lime, Grapefruit-Soda – we love!
For starters, you are offered only one option, but that comes with everything: sliced Avocado, a small salad with edamame and pomegranate seeds, tartar of the day, some oven fresh bread with a chili-ginger-mayonnaise.
The Bowls are not as big as we’re used to and truthfully quite expensive. All of them come with a base from sushi rice, edamame, sweet potato, mango, avocado, mixed green leaves, cucumber, and raw veggies:
Botanic Bowl: Basic Bowl, marinated tofu, spinach with sesame, herbs, pomegranate seeds with a chili-ginger mayonnaise, 12,50€.
Wild Ocean Bowl: Basic Bowl, tuna tataki, teriyaki, sesame, soy, ginger, wake, lime mayonnaise, 23€.
Salmon Greek Bowl: Basic Bowl, raw salmon, sesame, soy, ginger, wake and lime mayonnaise, 16,50€.
Meatpackers Choice: Basic Bowl, rare grilled US Strip loin, teriyaki, redcoleslaww, chili-ginger-mayonnaise, 23€.
The Burgers are tasty, come with a choice of sides: potato fries, sweetpotato fries, mixed salad or oven fresh bread with dip.
Salmon Between The Buns: grilled salmon, teriyaki, avocado, radish, spinach, green leafs and tomato with lime mayonnaise, 16€
Botanic Beef Burger: local ground beef, cheddar, tomato, cucumber, radish-mustard sauce BBQ sauce and green leafs, 12,50€.
Piggi In The Jungle Burger: we’re still waiting to confirm what this really is, 14,50€
Avocado Tree Burger: local ground beef, cheddar, avocado, tomato, chili sesame cilantro sauce and green leafs, 14,50€.
THE INTERIOR
I have always been a fan of black interiors! Potted plants line the walls, and hang in wire cages above the bar and tables. In her usual manner, Elisabeth Ocker from Omeo Home Line Interiors in Hamburg has added touches of brass and warm light to create a nice warm environment that suits the name. Cheers to that!
