While planning our upcoming trip to Los Angeles, this architectural masterpiece came across our way. Unfortunately, it won’t be finished until we are going to be there in a few weeks. But just by seeing the photo-realistic renderings of this design beauty, it’s already a spot on our want-to-see-list: The Joshua Tree Residence, a three-hour drive away from L.A. in the rocky desert.
THE EXTERIOR
Of course, Container dwellings are actually more of a temporary emergency solution than a residential paradise. However, this does not apply to the Joshua Tree Residence, designed by London designer James Whitaker. The house consists of several shipping containers arranged in the form of a starburst. The spectacular, futuristic building will stand alone in the Californian desert. And yes, this design project already looks amazing from the outside – but wait until you see the inside.
THE INTERIOR
The interior of the white cargo containers is modern and appears very luxurious. The 200 square meter luxury residence has a kitchen, a living room and three bedrooms. As you can see in the renderings , there is a stark interior with concreted flooring, white walls and minimal decor, including furniture made of plywood and Misfits seating by the famous industrial designer and architect Ron Arad. Whitaker and Arad have a common design history, having worked together in the same studio in London in the past.
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS
And the best part about it, the electricity is to be supplied via solar cells. Joshua Tree Residence has a large, protected wooden terrace and a garage with solar panels on the roof. According to Whitaker, the building will draw its electricity from this.
The house was commissioned by a film producer from Los Angeles – construction is scheduled to start at the beginning of next year. We can’t wait to have another excuse to come back to the west coast soon.
